The Ohio
River LifeBoat project is an expedition into the social
and ecological history of the Ohio River. A pontoon boat,
retrofitted with sustainable systems for energy and waste,
will travel down the river, dock at many towns and cities,
and host potluck dinners. The Lifeboat crew, I and two
others, will record the stories of people who come aboard.
The boat will launch in May 2006 from Pittsburgh and travel
to Cairo, Illinois where the Ohio empties into the Mississippi.
At the heart of this vessel is a dinner table for eight.
Through the sharing of food and conversing with people
who come aboard, LifeBoat is a gathering place for strangers
to meet and tell stories about the river.
