Future Tenant evolved from a conversation about the need to house MFA Community Affiliation Projects. Through this course, the 2003 MFA students formed partnerships with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the CMU Master of Arts Management Program to create an incubator space for emerging artists.

Future Tenant is an alternative art space for young artists in downtown Pittsburgh, meeting the Cultural Trust's desire to activate the vacant 801 Liberty Avenue store front and the MAM program’s desire to establish an alternative Cultural District performance space. This is a unique collaboration in which all parties agreed upon certain parameters and invested resources to open the space to the public in a variety of ways.
