Site-specific installation for Creative Time's Art
in the Anchorage (Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage), June-August,
1989. The installation was proposed and created to address
the issue of the fragility of life and specifically
the hole forming in the ozone layer of the upper atmosphere.
One enters this scaled down version of the Pantheon
through a portico of used refrigerators and air conditioners.
Inside the greenhouse tent structure one is enveloped
by a bubble of burgeoning life- a humid, fragrant, contemplative
environment that includes: an ecosystem of trees and
plants, a central gurgling pool with pipes emitting
eucalyptus steam, a ring of grow lights, and niches
containing large amphora. The whole scene is illuminated
from above by a simulated sun (an intense light within
a suspended satellite dish) that accentuates the oculus
atop the greenhouse structure.
