Listen to the South Side is a PublicArtPittsburgh, a project
initiated by the City of Pittsburgh to link artists with
neighborhood organizations to create community-based artworks.
Working with the South Side Local Development Corporation,
our intention was to celebrate the community at its entryways,
exposing its rich history and residents. The question was,
how to involve the residents? The solution was to literally
give the residents a voice, broadcasting their voices on
the airwaves.
A strategy evolved to interview a broad spectrum of people
who live and work in the neighborhood, supplement their
oral histories with factoids about South Side history, then
broadcast it 24/7 from the Carnegie Library, South Side
Branch with a small radio transmitter. Street signage invites
listeners to tune into 102.9 FM and Listen to the South
Side.
