This five week foundation course explores a broad range
of sculptural materials with an emphasis on mixed media.
Recently the material has shifted from traditional sculptural
materials to an emphasis on ecological materials and practice
to be sensitively sited on campus. Students expected to
learn a variety of skills and vocabulary related to mixed
media sculpture, assemblage, installation and site work.
The objective of this course is to creatively combine
in design, construction and presentation a variety of
natural, found, and/or recycled materials into an artwork
for a given site. Students are encouraged to pay particular
attention to existing site conditions and plan to interweave
their artwork as ‘parts of the whole ecosystem’
while conceiving and creating a ‘site work’.
Soil medium, and a variety of hardware and materials
are provided. Part of the challenge is for students to
obtain their own materials. Students are encouraged to
reuse and recycle materials from on and off campus.
