A collaboration between Siobhan Rigg, Carolyn Lambert,
and Robin Hewlett, Welcome to the C District was a mobile
performance that approached the city as a theater in
which to explore intersecting uses in contested urban
space. The performance involved 16 performers and ran
for 60 minutes. It was performed 8 times for small groups
of planned and spontaneous audience members. Dispersed
over four city blocks and two indoor locations, the
performance wove in and out of the everyday activity
of the street. In contested spaces, power structures
become evident as some desires gain priority over others,
dictating the subtle codes of exclusion and inclusion
that define public space. Welcome to the C District
included scripted scenarios, video projections, and
sound installations to conflate factual and fictional
versions of Liberty Avenue. Characters crossed time
and spatial boundaries in order to ask: Who plans the
city? Whose stories are told as history? Can performance
offer an ephemeral alternative to the inclusions and
exclusions of city planning?
