FOLD is a series of 26 paired pages of a picture book that responds to the consequences of crises in the Middle East, crises in photography, and crises in representation. The pages are united by a lower band of sand traversed by twisting taffy, a visual metaphor for our inability to extricate ourselves from an intractable conflict we helped to create.
Luxury of Memory was an illustrated paper on FOLD that was presented in July 2006 at the University of Leed’s “The Afterlife of Memory: Memoria/Historia/Amnesia” conference, organized by the Centre for Cultural Analysis, History & Theory in England.
Fold was exhibited in Gallery 175 in Seoul, Korea in May 2006. Portions of the series were included in After, curated by Laura Donaldson at Boston Center for the Arts in February/March, 2006. Several pages are reproduced on the cover of and in the “Works of Witness” issue of Hayden’s Ferry Review #38, published by Arizona State University.
