3D Printing Guidelines:
What kind of machine to we have?
Our rapid prototyper is a Dimension st1200. For product specs, click here.
What material does the rapid prototyper use?
The rapid prototyper uses ABS plastics that is melted to 300 degrees Celsius to create the model.
What colors are available for printing?
Currently we are only capable of printing with white plastics.
How large can my models be?
It is capable of building a model upto 10"x10"x12" (lxwxh). You can build models larger than 10"x10"x12" by building your model in pieces, please see the print technician for more information.
What format should my images be?
Our rapid prototyper can only read STL (stereo lithography) files. Almost all 3d modeling software can export files to (.stl).
How do I request a printing job?
You can request a print out by coming to the lab during lab hours. Visit the lab’s website for this semester’s schedule: http://artscool.cfa.cmu.edu/~printlab. You can also request a print online as well as upload your file to the printmaking server. Visit http://artscool.cfa.cmu.edu/~printlab and click on the online submission form. Prints are done on a first come first serve basis. Online submissions are given priority. Request for models are taken every Monday. All request must be received by Monday at 4:30 PM for proper turn around time. See policies on turn around time below.
What is the turn around time?
Turn around time for completions of models with dimesions less than 64 cubic inches in total volume are 7 days or 168 hours. NO LESS, NO EXECPTIONS. 64 cubic inches means a model that is 4"x4"x4" or 2"x32"x1" or 6"x6"x1.75", etc. For models larger than 64 cubic inches in volume, it will take more than 7 days. You will get an email notice when your model has been completed. Some models will be completed before the 7 days allotment, if so, please be informed that this is the exception and not the rule. All requests are under the scrutiny of the print technician and will be printed under the techinician's discretion.
How much does a model cost? Do I have to pay for the models?
Yes. You must pay for all models including tests. Models are $10.00/cubic inch of model material with a 40% subsidy if it is School of Art course related. With an email request, the DPL can provide an estimate of your model with your prepared STL file. Please contact Fran Flaherty for estimates. Plaidcash and Credit Cards are acceptable forms of payment.
