Environmetnal Sculpture: Sculpture - Living Roof
Living Roof
green roof

(2005)

This interdisciplinary project to design an extensive, sustainable roof on the south wing of Hamerschlag Hall grew out of a student SURG project. With the students impetus and advisors the Green Practices Committee became involved to help plan and raise funds, then locate Hamerschlag Hall as a likely candidate to demonstrate the sustainable value of a green roof.
Much credit is due to Facilities Management staff, Civil and Environmental engineering students and faculty and the project managers and contractors for allowing students to participate in this unique collaborative design/build process.

The course/group independent study was initiated after four years of advising an evolving group of students researching living roofs. Students participated in design discussions, met with the contractors, and a green roof specialist regularly, in the end student input became part of the final design and students actually planted the roof. In collaboration, Architecture and Civil and Environmental Engineering students designed and oversaw monitoring systems to measure stormwater management and energy savings that will provide valuable date about the benefits of green roofs.

After the design was complete students created a green roof manifesto to encourage policy for future green roofs on campus. Part of this strategy involved locating, designing and installing green roof systems on three different roofs.
